AURORA, IL, March 6, 2001 - Cabot Microelectronics Corporation (Nasdaq: CCMP), the leading supplier of chemical mechanical planarization (CMP) slurries, today announced the appointment of Martin M. Ellen to the position of Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.
Mr. Ellen joins Cabot Microelectronics after serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Whitman Corporation (NYSE: WH) through the closing of its recent merger with PepsiAmericas. Whitman, formerly PepsiAmericas, is a $3 billion international manufacturer, marketer and distributor of Pepsi Cola and other beverages. During Ellen's tenure as Chief Financial Officer, Whitman nearly doubled its size through a series of strategic U.S. and European territory and product line expansions.

Mr. Ellen will be responsible for leading Cabot Microelectronics' financial agenda and aligning it with the company's overall business goals, and will be a major contributor in defining short-term and long-term corporate strategy. He will report directly to Dr. Neville.

Mr. Ellen has previously worked in a number of diverse industries, including computer-related automotive technology, fast moving consumer goods, as well as health care and financial services. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in accountancy from the University of Illinois in 1975, is a certified public accountant, and received a Masters of Management degree from Northwestern University in 1987.
